How to care for an oak table

By Claire Dumas · 6 min read

Living room with a low sofa and an oak table

Know your finish

Look under the table top for the label. It tells you whether your oak is oiled or lacquered, and that changes everything below.

Oiled oak

Oil sits inside the wood. It feels warm and dry, marks easily and repairs just as easily.

Lacquered oak

Lacquer is a thin film on top. It resists spills well but scratches need a professional touch.

Daily cleaning

Wipe with a soft cloth wrung out in warm water and a drop of soap flakes. Dry it straight away, along the grain.

Stains and marks

Act fast and work from the outside of the mark towards the middle, so it does not spread.

Water rings

Lay a cotton cloth over the ring and press with a warm, dry iron for a few seconds. Repeat until it fades.

Wine and coffee

Blot, never rub. A paste of baking soda and water lifts most of what is left after an hour.

Re-oiling once a year

Sand lightly with 240 grit, wipe the dust, then rub in a thin coat of our Hardwax oil. Let it cure overnight.

When to call us

Deep burns, lifted veneer or a wobbly leg are workshop jobs. Every Maison Forme table has a ten-year repair service.

Blog and care guide

Numbered contents beside an article

A care guide in a furniture journal. The contents box sits beside the article and stays in view. H2 and H3 headings become a numbered list, with sub-entries such as 3.1 and 3.2, and the header has a button to minimize the box.

Minimize the box, then click 3.1

In the panel, set Anchors by Tags to H2, H3, Marker View to Numbers, Hierarchical View Button to On and Minimize On to Mobile Portrait.

Better sleep for school-age children

Portrait of Dr. Lena OrtizDr. Lena OrtizPaediatrician · 5 min read

Why children need more sleep than adults think

A school-age child needs nine to twelve hours a night. Less than that shows up as poor focus long before it shows up as tiredness.

Build a bedtime routine and keep it every night

Bath, pyjamas, teeth, one story, lights out. The same order at the same time tells the body that sleep is coming.

Screens off one hour before bed, phones included

Blue light delays melatonin. Charge phones and tablets outside the bedroom and swap the last hour for books or drawing.

A dark, quiet and cool bedroom helps

Aim for 18 to 20 degrees, blackout curtains and a night light only if your child asks for one.

When to talk to your doctor about sleep

Loud snoring, pauses in breathing or daytime sleepiness that lasts more than two weeks are worth a visit. Book a sleep check with Dr. Lena Ortiz.

Clinic health guide

Contents box that starts minimized

A health guide from a clinic. The contents box sits under the byline and starts minimized, so the article comes first. Open it to see arrow bullets, with long headings cut to one line.

Open Contents, then pick a section

In the panel, set Anchors by Tags to H2, Marker View to Bullets, Word Wrap to Off and Minimize On to Desktop (or smaller).

Features

Key features of Table Of Content

Every feature below is a setting in the widget panel or part of how the widget runs. Nothing needs custom code.

Built from your headings

The list is your page outline. Pick the heading tags in Anchors by Tags, from H1 to H6, and the widget turns them into jump links.

Scan one part of the page

Type a CSS selector in Container to build the heading index from one section only, such as the post content.

Numbered table of contents

Set Marker View to Numbers for an Elementor numbered table of contents (1, 1.1, 1.2), or to Bullets and pick the bullet in Icon.

Nested entries

Turn on Hierarchical View Button and H3 entries sit under their H2, like a document outline.

Collapsible table of contents

Turn on Minimize Box for an Elementor collapsible table of contents with expand and minimize buttons. Minimize On starts it minimized on the screen size you choose.

Smooth scroll and active entry

Elementor table of contents smooth scroll: a click glides to the heading, and as visitors scroll the entry of the section in view gets your active colour.

Style the box, header and list

Style the Box border, radius, padding and shadow, the Header colours and separator, and the List typography, Indent, colours and marker.

Make it sticky with Pro

For an Elementor sticky table of contents, put the widget in a column and pin that column with the Sticky/Pin Element extension, as on the original page, so the contents list stays beside the article.

FAQ

Questions about Table Of Content

How to add a table of contents in Elementor?

Activate Animation Addons Pro, drag the Table Of Content widget onto your page and pick the heading tags in Anchors by Tags. The widget builds the list from your headings when the page loads.

Is the Table Of Content widget free?

No. It is a Pro widget, part of Animation Addons Pro. Looking for an Elementor table of contents free of Elementor Pro? It does not need Elementor Pro and works with Elementor Free.

Do I have to type the entries by hand?

No. The entries come from the headings on the page, so when you rename or add a heading the table of contents follows.

Can I show numbers and nested sub-entries?

Yes. Set Marker View to Numbers and turn on Hierarchical View Button. H3 headings then sit under their H2 and read as 1.1, 1.2.

Can visitors collapse the table of contents?

Yes. Turn on Minimize Box for expand and minimize buttons. Minimize On starts the box minimized on the screen size you choose.

How do I make an Elementor sticky table of contents?

Place the widget in a side column and pin that column with the Sticky/Pin Element extension from Animation Addons Pro. Turn it off on mobile, where a side column does not fit.

Does the active entry change as I scroll?

Yes. When a heading passes the middle of the screen, its entry gets the active class, which you style with the active colour.

Can I build the list from one section only?

Yes. Type a CSS selector, such as .post-body, in Container. Only the headings inside that container become entries.

Why is my Elementor table of contents not working?

Check Anchors by Tags and Container. If no heading matches, the box prints "No headings were found on this page." Entries also do not scroll inside the Elementor editor, so test on the live page.

Is there an Elementor table of contents for blog posts?

Yes. Put the widget in your post template or at the top of a post. It scans the post content for the heading tags you pick and lists them.
